Never mind comparisons with Donald Trump, as someone who lives in Singapore, I can confidently say nothing Nigel Farage announced yesterday would look out of place here or in the other developed democracies of Asia. Yesterday the Reform chief announced asylum claims going back years would be reviewed with the possibility of over 400,000 folks being deported.

The only difference is – unlike the enfeebled countries of the West – Asia would never have got itself into this mess to start with. No ECHR here, friends. As for the 1951 Refugee Convention Reform wants Britain to leave, Singapore isn't even a signatory. Japan is. But Japan defines a refugee so narrowly it barely takes any in.

These nations have strong borders and strong law enforcement. Sod the freedom to screech like a banshee, real freedom is being able to walk alone at 3am in total safety.

That you can in Seoul, Singapore, Taipei and Tokyo (and, to some extent, in Budapest and Warsaw). Now try London, New York and Paris. See the difference?

Tough on crime, strong on the border and putting their own people first, East Asian states have it right.

As for those who claim Farage would undermine our economy since many sectors depend on migrant labour: time-limited work permits! Er, just like the Gulf and Far East.

And, by the way, if aspects of our country are structurally dependent on immigration then that is a structural problem with our country.

My only fear is by 2029 – when the next election is due – too much damage will have been done. But Reform still has the capacity to keep the pressure up until then.
